Introduction

Read this before your first roll

You bought a serum. What you actually bought is a 30-day experiment on your own scalp. This guide exists so the experiment is run properly.

Most people who buy a hair product use it for six days, miss a week, use it again, look in the mirror, and decide it does not work. The product never had a chance. Hair grows on a biological calendar that does not care about enthusiasm: a follicle needs weeks to wake up and months to show you what it did.

So this guide does three things:

  1. Explains the mechanism. When you understand why hair thins and what each active does, you stop guessing and start trusting the process.
  2. Gives you the routine. Exact steps, exact timing, the mistakes that quietly kill results.
  3. Sets expectations week by week, so you know what "working" looks like in week 2 versus week 8.
How to use this guideRead chapters 1 to 8 today (15 minutes). Then come back to chapter 9 whenever you doubt yourself, and to chapter 13 every 4 weeks to check your progress. Mark chapters as read so the guide remembers where you are.

A note on honesty. This serum is not minoxidil and it is not a miracle. It is four well-studied actives at real dosages, delivered where they need to go. Used daily, most people see less shedding first and new fine hairs after that. If you do not, you are covered by the 30-Day Growth Guarantee. Nothing in this guide is medical advice; if you have sudden or patchy hair loss, see a dermatologist.

Chapter 1

Why hair thins (and why it is not "bad hair")

Every hair on your head is produced by a tiny organ called a follicle. Each follicle runs a cycle with three phases:

PhaseWhat happensHow long
Anagen (growth)The follicle is active and pushing out hair.2 to 6 years
Catagen (transition)Growth stops, the follicle shrinks.2 to 3 weeks
Telogen (rest)The old hair sits loose, then sheds. A new hair should start behind it.about 3 months

On a healthy scalp, about 85 to 90% of follicles are in anagen at any moment. Losing 50 to 100 hairs a day is normal, because a new one replaces each.

Thinning is a cycle problem, not a hair problem

Hair gets thinner when two things happen at the same time:

  • Anagen gets shorter. Follicles spend less time growing and more time resting. More hairs on the pillow, fewer growing back.
  • Follicles miniaturize. Each cycle the follicle produces a slightly thinner, shorter, lighter hair. Eventually it makes a "peach fuzz" hair you can barely see. The follicle is still there; it is just producing almost nothing.

What pushes follicles in that direction

  • DHT. A hormone made from testosterone. In people who are genetically sensitive, DHT binds to receptors in the follicle and progressively shrinks it. This is the main driver of pattern thinning in men and women.
  • Stiffening around the root. With age and inflammation, the collagen sheath around the follicle hardens. The hair is held less firmly and sheds sooner.
  • Poor scalp environment. Reduced blood flow, chronic irritation, buildup of sebum and product, oxidative stress. Follicles are starved of the signals they need to restart growth.
  • Stress, sleep and nutrition. These do not cause pattern thinning, but they throw more follicles into telogen at once, which is why a rough few months shows up on your brush a season later.
The good newsA miniaturized follicle is a dormant follicle, not a dead one. Everything in this serum is aimed at the same target: reduce the pressure on the follicle, and give it the signals to restart a longer growth phase.

Chapter 2

Why most serums fail (it was not your fault)

If you have tried products before and nothing changed, there are three usual reasons, and none of them is "my hair is hopeless".

1. The product never reached the scalp

Follicles live in the skin, 3 to 5 millimetres down. Between a dropper and that skin there is a layer of hair, a film of sebum and dead cells. Drip a serum on top and most of it coats the hair shaft, looks greasy for an hour, and is gone at the next wash. You were treating your hair; the problem is in the skin under it.

2. The dose was decorative

Look at the back of most bottles. You will see impressive ingredient names hidden inside a "proprietary blend", with no percentage. That usually means the active is present at a fraction of the amount used in the studies that made it famous. It is there so it can be on the label, not so it can work.

3. The routine collapsed

A serum that needs a dropper, a towel, ten minutes and a hair wash afterwards gets used three times. The best formula in the world does nothing in a drawer.

How Aparthy was designed around these three failures
  • Roll-on applicator that parts the hair and presses the liquid against the skin, so the actives land on the scalp, not the strands.
  • Named actives at named percentages: 3% Rosemary extract, 2% Aminexil, 3% Redensyl, 2% AnaGain. The numbers are on the label because they match the research.
  • 30 seconds, no rinse, no grease. Fits before work and before bed, which is the only kind of routine that survives.

The next four chapters take each active in turn: what it targets, why that matters, and what the evidence looks like. You do not need to memorize them. You need to know enough to trust the daily roll.

Chapter 3 · Active 1 of 4

Rosemary extract, 3%

3%
Job: circulation and DHT pressureThe oldest ingredient in the formula and the one with the most famous head-to-head study.

What it does

Rosemary is rich in carnosic acid and rosmarinic acid. In the scalp these compounds do two useful things: they support local microcirculation (more blood flow means more oxygen and nutrients reaching the follicle) and they have been shown in lab work to interfere with the activity of DHT at the follicle, the hormone behind miniaturization.

The study people talk about

In 2015, researchers ran a randomized trial with 100 people with pattern hair loss. Half used rosemary oil, half used 2% minoxidil, the most common over-the-counter treatment. After 6 months, both groups showed a significant increase in hair count, with no significant difference between them. The rosemary group reported less scalp itching.

That does not make rosemary "the same as minoxidil" in every situation. It does mean that, used consistently for months, it produced comparable results in that trial, without the itch, the dependency or the greasy finish that make people quit minoxidil.

Why 3%

Enough to matter, low enough to be non-irritating for daily use on all skin types. Higher concentrations of essential oils mostly add irritation, not results.

What you may noticeA calmer, less itchy scalp in the first week. Rosemary also has a mild antimicrobial effect, which helps if your scalp tends to get flaky or congested.

Chapter 4 · Active 2 of 4

Aminexil, 2%

2%
Job: keep the hair anchoredThe "less shedding" ingredient. Works on the tissue around the root, not the hair itself.

The problem it solves

Around every follicle there is a sheath of collagen. In thinning scalps this sheath gradually stiffens and hardens (dermatologists call it perifollicular fibrosis). A stiff sheath squeezes the follicle and holds the hair less firmly, so hairs are released earlier than they should be. This is a big part of why you see so much hair on the brush before you see any visible thinning.

What Aminexil does

Aminexil is a molecule developed specifically to counter that stiffening. It helps keep the collagen around the root flexible, so the follicle is not compressed and the hair stays anchored through its full growth phase. It is a close relative of minoxidil in structure, without the blood-pressure history that keeps minoxidil in the pharmacy aisle.

What the research shows

Aminexil has been studied in clinical settings for over two decades, mostly in leave-on scalp treatments. The consistent finding is a reduction in the number of hairs shed and an increase in hairs remaining in the growth phase after a few months of daily use. It is a maintenance ingredient: its job is to stop you losing what you have, so the growth ingredients have something to build on.

What you may noticeThis is usually the first visible change: fewer strands on the pillow, in the shower drain and on the brush, typically from week 2 onward.

Chapter 5 · Active 3 of 4

Redensyl, 3%

3%
Job: wake up resting folliclesThe "new growth" ingredient. Targets the stem cells that decide whether a follicle restarts.

Where growth actually starts

In the outer root sheath of every follicle sit stem cells. When they get the right signal, they divide and the follicle enters a new anagen phase: a new hair is built. In a thinning scalp these cells stay quiet for longer and longer. The follicle is not dead; it is waiting for a signal that never comes.

What Redensyl does

Redensyl is a patented complex built around two plant molecules: DHQG (from larch tree) and EGCG2 (a stabilized form of the green tea compound). DHQG is designed to act on those follicle stem cells and push them toward division, which is the trigger for a new growth phase. EGCG2 reduces inflammation around the follicle so the environment does not sabotage the restart. The complex also includes glycine and zinc, building blocks the follicle uses to make keratin.

What the research shows

In the manufacturer's clinical work, volunteers using 3% Redensyl daily for 3 months showed an increase in the proportion of hairs in the growth phase and a decrease in hairs in the resting phase, with an estimated net gain of thousands of new hairs over the scalp compared with placebo. Independent lab work has confirmed its effect on follicle stem cell activity.

Why 3% matters3% is the concentration used in the clinical testing. Many products list Redensyl but include it at 0.5% or less. Yours is at the studied dose.
What you may noticeFine, short "baby hairs" along the part line and hairline, typically from week 3 to 6. They look insignificant at first. They are the whole point: each one is a follicle that restarted.

Chapter 6 · Active 4 of 4

AnaGain, 2%

2%
Job: turn the growth signals back onFrom organic pea sprouts. Works on the chemical messengers between skin and follicle.

The signal problem

A follicle decides to grow based on messenger proteins from the surrounding skin. Two of the most important are FGF7, which tells the follicle to build hair, and Noggin, which lifts the brake that keeps a follicle in rest. In thinning scalps, both signals fade.

What AnaGain does

AnaGain is an extract of organic pea sprouts (Pisum sativum), standardized for the compounds that stimulate those two signals in the dermal papilla, the small cluster of cells at the base of the follicle that acts as its control centre. In lab studies it increased the expression of FGF7 and Noggin. In a clinical trial, 2% AnaGain used daily for 3 months shifted the balance of follicles from resting to growing and reduced hair loss in volunteers.

Why it pairs with Redensyl

Redensyl acts on the stem cells that build the new hair. AnaGain acts on the signalling that tells them to. One is the workforce, the other is the instruction. Using both at once is why the formula does not rely on a single mechanism.

Chapter 7

The roll-on: why delivery is the fifth ingredient

Four good actives are worthless if they end up on your hair instead of your skin. The applicator is what makes the other four count.

What the roller does that a dropper cannot

  • Parts the hair. The ball pushes strands aside as it moves, so the liquid meets skin.
  • Applies pressure. Light pressure plus the rolling motion works the serum into the surface layer instead of leaving it to sit on top.
  • Massages as it goes. Scalp massage on its own has been shown in small studies to increase hair thickness over months, likely by stretching the skin cells around the follicle and improving blood flow. Every application is a mini massage.
  • Doses evenly. No pooling, no drips running down your forehead, no wasted product.

Where to roll

The serum works where it touches skin, so target skin you can reach:

  • Part line. Roll along it, then make a new part 2 cm to each side and roll again.
  • Hairline and temples. Roll along the front edge and into the corners.
  • Crown. Make a few parts in a star pattern out from the centre.
  • Any thinning spot you are watching.
The 30-second ruleAfter rolling, use your fingertips to massage the area for about 30 seconds. This is not optional decoration; it is where a good share of the absorption happens. Roll, massage, done. No rinse.

What it feels like

Cool and light, then nothing. It dries down in a couple of minutes with no film, no shine and no fragrance. You can style, use dry shampoo or put on a hat straight after.

Chapter 8

Your daily routine, step by step

Twice a day, morning and night, on a dry or towel-dried scalp. Here is the whole thing.

  1. Start on clean-ish, dry skin. Ideally after your shower and once hair is towel-dried, or in the morning before styling. Wet hair dilutes the serum; heavy styling product blocks it.
  2. Part the hair where you want to treat. Use a comb or your fingers.
  3. Roll along the part, skin contact, light pressure. 4 to 6 passes per line. Move the part and repeat until the area is covered. Whole scalp takes 6 to 10 lines.
  4. Massage 30 seconds with fingertips (not nails). Small circles, moderate pressure.
  5. Do not rinse. Wait 2 to 3 minutes before styling if you like, though it is not required.
  6. Repeat at night before bed. Night application gets the longest uninterrupted contact time.
a day, AM and PM
30smassage each time
0rinse, grease or smell

Building the habit

  • Keep the bottle where you brush your teeth. Same trigger, same moment, twice a day.
  • Missed the morning? Do it at night. Missed a whole day? Just continue. Do not "double up".
  • Set a phone reminder for the first 14 days. After that it runs itself.
  • One bottle is designed to last about 4 weeks at twice-daily use on a normal-sized treatment area. If you are treating the whole scalp, it may go faster; that is fine.

Quick check: your situation

Two questions. Your answers shape the summary at the end of the guide.

1. Where are you seeing thinning most?

2. What is your realistic routine?

Chapter 9

What to expect, week by week

This is the chapter to reread when you are tempted to quit. Hair works on a slow clock. Here is what "working" looks like at each stage.

WhenWhat is happening underneathWhat you may notice
Days 1 to 7
The groundwork
Actives reach follicles the old dropper never touched. Scalp inflammation starts to calm.Nothing visible. Scalp feels calmer, cleaner, less itchy. Some people notice a little extra shedding as old resting hairs are released; that is normal and short.
Week 2 to 3
The drain test
Aminexil is keeping hairs anchored; fewer are being released early.Fewer strands on the pillow, brush and shower drain. Hair resists tugging better when you brush.
Week 3 to 6
Baby hairs
Redensyl and AnaGain have restarted some resting follicles. New hairs are pushing through.Fine, short, sometimes lighter hairs along the part and hairline. Easy to miss unless you look with your phone camera in good light.
Week 6 to 12
The compounding effect
New hairs lengthen and thicken. More follicles restart each cycle. Miniaturized follicles produce slightly thicker hairs.Density builds. The part looks narrower, the scalp shows through less, styling holds better.
Month 3 onward
Maintenance
Follicles are spending more of their time in growth. Stopping now lets DHT and stiffening creep back. Results hold and keep improving slowly. This is a routine, like brushing your teeth, not a course you finish.
The shedding scareSome people see a small increase in shedding in the first 1 to 2 weeks. This is old, resting hairs being pushed out by follicles restarting underneath. It is a sign the follicle woke up, not a sign to stop. It settles within days.
The honest timelineJudge shedding at 3 weeks. Judge baby hairs at 6 weeks. Judge density at 12 weeks. Judging density at 2 weeks is like judging a diet by lunchtime.

Chapter 10

Habits that multiply your results

The serum does the heavy lifting. These habits remove the things working against it. None of them cost money.

Washing

  • Wash every 2 to 3 days, or daily if your scalp is oily. A congested scalp blocks absorption; an over-stripped one gets inflamed. Both are bad.
  • Shampoo the scalp, not just the hair. Fingertips, 60 seconds, then rinse well.
  • Skip heavy silicones and waxes on the scalp. Keep styling product on the mid-lengths.

Mechanical stress

  • Loosen tight ponytails, buns and braids. Constant tension on the hairline thins it (traction alopecia) and no serum beats a rubber band.
  • Pat hair dry instead of rubbing. Detangle from the ends up. Use a wide-tooth comb on wet hair.
  • Keep heat tools under 180°C / 350°F and away from the scalp.

The inside job

  • Protein. Hair is keratin, which is protein. Consistently low protein intake shows up as thinner hair months later.
  • Iron, zinc, vitamin D. The three deficiencies most often found in people with diffuse shedding. If your shedding is heavy and sudden, ask your doctor for a blood test; it is a cheap way to rule out an easy fix.
  • Sleep. Growth hormone and tissue repair happen mostly in deep sleep. Seven hours is not a luxury for follicles.
  • Stress. A stressful season pushes follicles into rest all at once, and the shedding arrives 2 to 3 months later. You cannot always fix the stress, but you can stop blaming the serum for a shed that started before you opened it.
  • Smoking restricts the tiny blood vessels that feed follicles. Quitting is the single biggest circulation upgrade available.
The 1% ruleYou do not need all of these. Pick the two that are easiest for you and do them for a month. Habits that stick beat habits that impress.

Chapter 11

Seven mistakes that quietly kill results

  1. Rolling on hair instead of skin. If the roller glides over the top, you are conditioning your hair. Part first, then roll on the part.
  2. Skipping the massage. Thirty seconds of fingertips is part of the dose, not a bonus.
  3. Applying to soaking wet hair. Water dilutes the serum and washes it down your neck. Towel-dry first.
  4. Applying over styling product. Wax, gel and dry shampoo form a layer the serum has to fight through. Serum first, product after.
  5. Using it "when you remember". Follicles respond to consistent signal. Three days on, four days off is a signal to do nothing.
  6. Judging by the mirror at week 2. Use the drain test at week 3 and photos at week 6 (next chapter). The mirror lies early on.
  7. Stopping when it works. The most common mistake of all. Density comes from follicles staying in growth. Stop the routine and the pressure that thinned them returns. Once results show, this becomes maintenance: keep going.
Can I use it with other products?Yes. It sits happily under styling products, with any shampoo, and alongside supplements. If you already use minoxidil, apply the serum first, let it dry, then the minoxidil, or use them at different times of day. If you use prescription treatments, ask the prescriber.

Chapter 12

How to know it is working: track it like an experiment

Memory is a terrible instrument for measuring hair. Set up two simple measurements today and you will never have to wonder.

1. The photo protocol (5 minutes, once a month)

  • Same spot, same light, same part. Bathroom, overhead light, phone held at the same height. Part the hair in the same place each time.
  • Take four photos: top down on the part, front hairline, crown from behind (use the mirror or a helper), and a close-up of the worst area.
  • Do it on day 0, then every 4 weeks. Put them in one album named "Hair". Compare day 0 to day 84, not yesterday to today.

2. The drain count (2 minutes, once a week)

Pick one wash day per week. Before you wash, put a hair catcher in the drain or just look at what collects. Count roughly: "a lot", "some", "a little". Write it in your notes app with the date. By week 3 to 4 most people watch this drop a category.

3. The tug test

Gently run your fingers through a small section from root to end. On a shedding scalp, several hairs come away every time. As Aminexil does its job, this drops to one or none.

The monthly check-inEvery 4 weeks, open your photo album, look at last month's drain notes, and answer one question: is the trend going the right way? If yes, keep going. If after 30 days it is not, email us and we refund you. That is what the guarantee is for.

Quick check: your commitment

3. Which tracking method will you actually do?

4. Which habit from chapter 10 will you add?

Chapter 13

Questions people ask us

Is it safe for all hair types and both men and women?

Yes. It contains no hormones, no minoxidil and no fragrance, and it works on the skin of the scalp, which does not care whether the hair above it is straight, curly, coloured or grey.

Will it make my scalp oily or my hair flat?

No. It is water-light, dries down in minutes and leaves no residue. It will not affect styling.

Can I use it on colour-treated hair?

Yes. It does not interact with colour. Wait 48 hours after a colour or chemical service before restarting, to let the scalp settle.

I am pregnant or breastfeeding.

The formula has no hormones or minoxidil, but we always recommend checking with your doctor before using any active scalp product during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

What if I miss a few days?

Just continue. Do not double the dose. Consistency over months matters far more than a perfect week.

How long should I keep using it?

Give it a full 12 weeks to judge density. After that it is maintenance: most people keep it in their routine the way they keep a toothbrush.

What about the guarantee?

30-Day Growth GuaranteeRoll it on every day for 30 days. If you are not seeing the difference, email contact@drmichaelgrant.com within 30 days of delivery for a full refund, even if the bottle is empty. No questionnaire, no restocking fee.

How do I manage my refills?
